  • Climate Hot and humid much of the year

The short answer

Bring about a week or two of comfortable clothes, your current medications in their original pharmacy containers, photo ID and insurance cards, a list of your doctors and emergency contacts, and a few personal comforts. Leave alcohol, drugs and weapons at home. Every center has its own list, so ask for it in writing before arrival day.

The packing list

Documents and money

  • Photo ID and insurance cards
  • A written list of medications, doses and prescribing doctors
  • Names and phone numbers of family, your doctors and anyone handling your affairs
  • A card for small purchases, if the center allows it

Health

  • Current prescription medications in original pharmacy containers
  • Medical devices you use, such as a CPAP machine or glasses

Clothes and comfort

  • Light, comfortable clothes for Florida heat, plus a sweater for air-conditioned rooms
  • Workout clothes, walking shoes and swimwear if there is a pool
  • Toiletries that do not contain alcohol
  • A journal, a few books and some photos of people you love

What centers usually hold back

Every center sets its own rules, but these items appear on many lists:

  • Alcohol, drugs and drug paraphernalia
  • Weapons of any kind
  • Products that contain alcohol, such as some mouthwashes and hand sanitizers
  • Supplements or over-the-counter medicines that a doctor has not approved
  • Large amounts of cash or valuable jewelry

Florida law protects your belongings. Under s. 397.501, a person in treatment may keep their own clothing and personal items. A provider may hold something temporarily only for medical or safety reasons, must record why, and must return it at discharge, even if the person leaves early. The same law lets providers set reasonable rules on phone calls, mail and visits, as long as they explain those rules to you.

Arrival day

Most admissions start with paperwork, a check of your bags, and a medical and mental health assessment. If withdrawal is likely, medical detox starts right away. Do not stop drinking or taking benzodiazepines suddenly in the days before admission without a doctor’s advice. Severe alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal can be dangerous and can need a hospital. In an emergency, call 911.

Getting there can be the hardest part. Some families drive together. Some arrange for a sober companion to travel with their loved one. If you are packing for someone else, keep it simple, label everything, and do not hide notes or gifts in the bag, because staff will find them during the check.

If work will not stop, ask before you pack. Executive programs may allow a laptop at set times, and others will not. Knowing the stay length helps too: our page on how long rehab lasts explains the usual options.

Questions about packing for rehab

Can I bring my phone?

It depends on the center. Some hold phones for the first days, some allow them at set hours, and some executive programs allow more. Ask before arrival so your family and work know how to reach you.

Can I bring my own medications?

Usually yes, in their original pharmacy containers, but the medical team will review them and may hold and give them to you. Bring an up-to-date list and your prescribers’ contact details.

Can I smoke or vape in rehab?

Rules vary. Some centers have designated smoking areas, others ban tobacco and vapes entirely. Ask, and if you plan to quit, ask whether nicotine replacement is available.

How much clothing should I pack?

Enough for about a week or two, since most centers have laundry. Ask if there is a dress code for outings or family sessions.
