Three kinds of care, one city
Boca Raton sits at the southern edge of Palm Beach County, just above Broward County. When you search for luxury rehab here, the results mix three different things. Residential centers are where your loved one lives and is treated in the same place. Day programs provide treatment during the day, and people sleep somewhere else. Sober homes are places to live, not places to be treated.
All three can look alike online. The photos show a pool, a bright kitchen and a quiet bedroom. The real difference is who is awake at 3 a.m. In a residential center, clinical staff are on site around the clock. In a day program with housing, evenings may be watched by house staff who are not clinicians.
Neither model is wrong. A day program with housing can be a sensible step after a residential stay. It is a different level of care, though, and it should be priced like one. Ask which one you are paying for.
Questions to ask about where your loved one will sleep
These questions clear up most of the confusion in one phone call. Write the answers down, and ask for them in writing too.
- Do clients live at the same address where they get treatment?
- Is a nurse or other clinical staff member on site overnight?
- If housing is separate, who runs it, and is it a certified recovery residence?
- How do clients get between the house and the program each day?
- What does the price include: housing, meals, transport, psychiatry?
Two terms come up often. A partial hospitalization program, or PHP, is a day program with several hours of treatment most days of the week. An intensive outpatient program, or IOP, has fewer hours, so people can often work or study around it. Both can be paired with housing. Neither is the same as residential care.
Florida runs a voluntary certification program for recovery residences (sober homes) under section 397.487 of the state statutes. Certification means the home has been reviewed by an approved credentialing body. Our guide to sober houses in Florida explains what that review covers and what it does not.

Boca Raton questions
Is a day program with housing the same as residential rehab?
No. In residential care, treatment and living happen in one place with staff on site day and night. In a day program, your loved one goes back to separate housing in the evening. Ask which levels of care the center is licensed for, then check the license on the Florida DCF licensing page.
Are sober homes in Boca Raton licensed?
Sober homes are places to live, not treatment programs, so they are not licensed as treatment. Florida does offer voluntary certification for recovery residences. Ask whether a home is certified and by whom, then confirm it yourself. Our luxury sober living guide covers what to look for.
Can we visit our loved one during treatment?
Most centers have set visiting times, and many hold family sessions. Ask how often visits happen, whether they are supervised, and whether family therapy is part of the price or extra. Our page on family programs explains what a good one includes.
What if my loved one will not leave home for treatment?
Some people start with medically supervised detox at home. It is not safe for everyone: severe alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal can need a hospital, and in an emergency you should call 911. Call 1-888-530-5153 to talk it through. Calls are answered by a partner at-home treatment provider, not by this guide.
