Safety comes first: alcohol withdrawal

If your loved one drinks heavily every day, stopping suddenly can be dangerous. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) says withdrawal after long, heavy drinking can be painful or even life-threatening, with symptoms such as seizures and a racing heart (NIAAA treatment guide). Doctors can give medicines that make withdrawal safer. Please do not let anyone stop cold turkey without medical advice.

This is the first thing to ask any alcohol program: who manages withdrawal, where, and with what medical cover at night? A good answer names a physician, describes nursing checks around the clock, and explains when a patient would be moved to a hospital. Our medical detox guide explains more.

When the risk is lower, some people can withdraw at home with medical supervision. Our at-home detox guide explains who fits. Severe alcohol withdrawal can need a hospital. In an emergency, call 911.

What good alcohol treatment includes

After withdrawal, the work is treating alcohol use disorder (AUD), the medical name for drinking a person cannot control despite harm to health, work or family. NIAAA describes the parts of care with research behind them:

  • Medicines. Three are approved for AUD: naltrexone, which can reduce the urge to drink; acamprosate, which eases discomfort during abstinence; and disulfiram, which causes unpleasant symptoms if a person drinks. SAMHSA’s naltrexone page notes it is usually started after detox is complete.
  • Behavioral therapy. Counseling with a licensed clinician, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (which helps change the thoughts and habits around drinking) and motivational approaches that build a person’s own reasons to change.
  • Family involvement. NIAAA says family therapy raises the chance of staying sober compared with individual counseling alone.
  • Peer support. Mutual-support groups, including 12-step groups, are free and flexible. NIAAA says they work well alongside treatment led by health professionals.

Medicine is not right for everyone, but a program should at least discuss it with you and explain its view. Ask who will keep prescribing after discharge, since naltrexone is often taken for months.

Questions to ask an alcohol program

These come from NIAAA’s guidance. Its Alcohol Treatment Navigator explains how to listen for quality in the answers.

  • What kinds of treatment do you offer, and do you prescribe medicine for alcohol use disorder?
  • Is the plan tailored to my loved one, or does everyone follow the same schedule?
  • What will be expected of them each day?
  • How do you measure progress?
  • What happens if they drink again during or after treatment?

Luxury settings add privacy, single rooms, more one-on-one sessions and often a chef. These can help someone agree to go and stay. They do not change the medical needs above. Take these questions with you when you compare centers in Palm Beach or Tampa Bay.

Alcohol rehab questions

Is it safe to stop drinking at home?

It depends on how much and how long your loved one has been drinking, and on their health. People who drink heavily every day can have seizures or other serious withdrawal symptoms. Talk to a doctor first. Supervised at-home detox suits some people, but severe withdrawal can need a hospital. In an emergency, call 911.

Does luxury alcohol rehab use medication?

Many programs do, but not all. Ask directly whether they prescribe naltrexone, acamprosate or disulfiram, what decides the choice, and who manages it after your loved one goes home.

How long does alcohol rehab take?

Withdrawal is only the first step. Treatment for alcohol use disorder takes much longer and often continues as outpatient care after a residential stay. Ask for the plan for the months after discharge. Our guide to how long rehab lasts covers this.

What if my loved one refuses to go?

Most adults choose treatment for themselves, and how you raise it matters. Our guide to helping a loved one accept treatment covers approaches. The Marchman Act page explains Florida’s court process for involuntary assessment.
