What private treatment looks like here

Tampa Bay is a large metro area on the Gulf Coast. Private programs here range from riverfront campuses in Tampa to small mental health programs in Clearwater. You will also see larger groups with several offices around the bay.

When one name has several offices, ask which address does what. One site might offer detox and residential care, while another runs only day programs. Day programs, called PHP (partial hospitalization) or IOP (intensive outpatient), mean your loved one lives at home or in sober housing and comes in for several hours of treatment.

Tampa Bay also has programs that focus on mental health, such as trauma, depression or anxiety. If your loved one has both a mental health condition and a substance problem, look for dual-diagnosis care.

When your loved one says no

Many families reach a point where the person they love refuses help. Florida has a law for this, the Marchman Act. It lets a family member ask a court to order an assessment and, in some cases, treatment for substance use (s. 397.675 and the sections that follow).

The criteria are strict. In plain terms, the court looks at whether the person has lost self-control over substance use and, because of it, either cannot see their need for help or is likely to harm themselves or someone else. A judge decides, and an attorney can explain the steps.

A court order is a big step, and it can strain trust. Many families first try a planned, calm conversation, sometimes with a professional. Our guides to helping a loved one accept treatment and the Marchman Act go further. Ask any center you call whether it accepts clients under a Marchman Act order.

Tampa Bay questions

Can I make my adult child go to rehab in Florida?

Not on your own. Under the Marchman Act, a court can order an assessment, and sometimes treatment, if strict criteria are met. Talk to an attorney or the clerk of court about how a petition works. If there is immediate danger, call 911.

Is a day program enough, or does my loved one need residential care?

It depends on how severe the problem is, whether medical detox is needed, and how safe home is. A good center will assess your loved one and explain why it recommends a level of care. Ask for that reasoning in writing.

Are there women-only programs in Tampa Bay?

Yes. At least one program in Clearwater describes itself as women-only and focused on mental health. If substance use is part of the picture, ask whether the program treats that too, or works with a program that does.

Can treatment start at home while we decide?

Sometimes. Licensed at-home providers can run medically supervised detox or early treatment for some people, and a sober companion can add daily support. It is not safe for everyone: severe alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal can need a hospital, and in an emergency call 911.

Detox at home, at your hotel, or wherever you choose

Medically supervised detox and rehab where you are staying, run by licensed clinicians. Not right for everyone: severe alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal may need a hospital or residential setting.

Toll-free. You can call just to ask questions.
